Childhood osteosarcoma is a form of malignant bone cancer and the 6th most common form of cancer in children under the age of 15. The disease affects over 500 adults and 400 children every year, with a two-thirds survival rate.

Causes of Osteosarcoma

Unfortunately, the causes behind osteosarcoma are not known. Theories exist about environmental triggers such as fluoride in drinking water or exposure to radium.

Symptoms Associated with Osteosarcoma

Typically, the most common side effect associated with osteosarcoma is pain, often emanating from the tumor location. Larger tumors, particularly those on the knees, can appear as swelling. In addition, because the affected bone is usually weaker, it's more susceptible to breaking.

Over 50% of all cases of childhood osteosarcoma occur around the knee area.

Risk Factors

Age

The risk for developing osteosarcoma peaks during the adolescent growth period. Some researchers think that there may be a correlation between rapid bone growth development and a child's risk for developing the cancer.

Gender of the Patient

Osteosarcoma typically occurs in males and is seen twice as frequently as in young women.

Exposure to Radiation

If a patient has been subjected to radiation treatment for other cancers or conditions, they will have a higher risk of contracting the disease.

Additional Bone Diseases

Patients who have suffered from other bone diseases, like Paget's disease of the bone, have an increased risk of being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Typically though, this occurs in adults and is rare with children.

Genetics

Childhood osteosarcoma is often more prevalent in children with certain rare cancer syndromes that are inherited - such as retinoblastoma or Li-Fraumeni syndrome.

Types of Osteosarcoma

There are three sub-types of osteosarcoma that can be recognized by how they appear on X-rays and under a microscope. Some of these sub-types have a better prognosis than others.

The three sub-types of osteosarcoma are high-grade, intermediate and low grade. High-grade is a conventional development of the disease characterized by small cell formation. Intermediate grade is periosteal, meaning the membrane around the bones is affected. Low grade is also periosteal, but also includes low grade intrasseous.

How Osteosarcoma is Treated

Osteosarcoma is occasionally treated with surgery - at which point the afflicted limb or a portion of the afflicted limb is amputated. Usually, the patient or parents of the patient choose to use the same surgeon for both the biopsy and the therapeutic surgery.

Patients or the parents of patients should consult with their surgeon about the best method and how best to remove the cancer while saving as much use of the affected arm or leg as possible.

Despite the prevalence of surgery, most cases of childhood osteosarcoma are treated with chemotherapy in conjunction with surgery. There are a variety of drugs used in osteosarcoma chemotherapy programs, with each dose determined by the individual patient and disease.

A child suffering from this affliction - and the parents of this child -have very difficult decisions to make when presented with options of chemotherapy and surgery. Those facing the prospect of an amputation should definitely seek a second medical opinion before moving forward.

There is growing evidence that wasabi every day keeps the cancer specialist away. Wasabi is an aquatic vegetable in the same family as broccoli, cabbage, kale, and watercress. Like the other crucifers, wasabi contains high concentrations of cancer-fighting isothiocyanates. Unlike the other crucifers, the wasabi root produces primarily only one of these anticancer chemicals, 6-methylsulfinylhexyl isothiocyanate. These chemicals kill certain kinds of cancer cells.

In the case of leukemia cells, this chemical signals the damaged cell that its life cycle is over, and that it should die rather than multiply. Obligingly, it does. In the case of solid cancer tumors, this chemical keeps blood from clotting around tumors long enough for the tumor to reach out and burrow its own blood supply. The 6-methylsulfinylhexyl isothiocyanate does not kill the cancer directly, but it helps starve it out of existence before it can spread.

This chemical is also heart-healthy. 6-methylsufinylhexyl isothiocyanate stops the formation of blood clots better than aspirin, and at least one physician suggests it could be adapted to use in the emergency room for treating chest pain.

If you make wasabi from a wasabi tuber, you should give it a good brushing first. Peeling is not necessary. Japanese chefs prepare wasabi is prepared by grating the fresh rhizome against a rough surface, traditionally a sharkskin grater. The sharkskin gives grated wasabi a smooth, soft and aromatic finish. Japanese diners typically spread a tiny amount of wasabi paste on fish (sashimi, raw fish by itself, or sushi, raw or cooked fish rolled in sweet and sour rice), and then dip the side of the fish that does not have wasabi on it in soy sauce. The soy sauce does not touch the wasabi.

American diners often dump soy sauce in their chopstick holders and vigorously stir their wasabi in the sauce, making "wasabi-joyu," literally "wasabi and soy." This disperses the wasabi flavor through the sauce, but makes it impossible to taste the wasabi with your palate rather than with your tongue in most wasabi recipes.

Not product that reads "wasabi" on the label is really wasabi. The wasabi powder you find in the majority of grocery stores and that is used in a majority of sushi restaurants in the United States really shouldn't be called wasabi at all. Manufacturers cut costs by using dried horseradish powder, some dried mustard, a little cornstarch, and yellow and blue dyes to make green. This faux wasabi you find in stores is much more convenient and a great deal less expensive than the real thing, but has few of its healing properties.

Neuroblastoma stage 4 is the most advanced stage of the neuroblastoma cancer. It means that the disease has spread to other areas of the body, like the liver or bone marrow, and the prognosis is not always good.

If you are the parent of a child diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the fourth stage, read on for an overview of the disease, information on stage 4 and how the disease is treated.

A Neuroblastoma Overview

Approximately 650 cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed every year in the U.S. It's the third most common kind of cancer in children and the most frequent form in infants. Approximately 90 percent of all cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed in children aged 6 and under.

About 30% of all neuroblastoma cases begin in the adrenal glands, another 30% start in the ganglia of the abdomen's sympathetic nervous system, and the majority of the remainder begin in the neck's sympathetic ganglia, chest or pelvis.

Rates for Five-Year Survival

The five-year survival rate for infants (under the age of 1) is 83%, while it is 55% for children between the ages of 1 to 4, and 40% for older children.

But children with stage 4 neuroblastoma normally have much lower survival rates. They hover between 50% and 80% for infants (under a year old) and drop to 15% for children over the age of 1.

Treatments Used for Stage 4 of Neuroblastoma

Children who are diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma are considered high risk. They are typically subjected to intensive, high-dosage chemotherapy accompanied by surgery and stem cell transplantations. Typically though, surgery is the first step unless the neuroblastoma has spread too far.

In most cases, treatment involves a combination of medications. The main drugs used to treat children with neuroblastoma are cisplatin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, etoposide and topotecan. These drugs produce a positive response in two thirds of children.

In certain cases, particularly when the cancer has spread too far to be completely removed by surgery - as is the case with the fourth stage of neuroblastoma - chemotherapy is the primary treatment.

Bone Marrow Transplantation and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Because high-dosage chemotherapy will wipe out bone marrow, new blood cells are no longer being developed, so children are at a high risk. Because kids diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma must often undergo intense chemotherapy sessions, they should also be prepared for a bone marrow transplant and/or a secondary blood stem cell transplant.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy has been used in the past to destroy any neuroblastoma cells that remain behind after surgery. It's also used to shrink tumors.

However, in many instances of late-stage and advanced neuroblastoma, it's rarely used unless it's implemented as a pain-management tool or in conjunction with chemotherapy.

Children facing cancer of any type are in such a vulnerable position. The earlier in life a malignant diagnosis, the great the prospect of survival. Parents who suspect the potential for this cancer should obtain confirmation from a trusted oncologist specializing in the disease.

Scientists Find Allergies May Prevent Specific Cancers

A recent study conducted by researchers from Cornell University concluded that the development of allergies may be the body’s natural way of protecting itself from certain types of cancers.

The study included a reexamination of approximately 650 studies from the previous 50 years. The team found that, "inverse allergy-cancer associations are far more common with cancers of organ systems that come in direct contact with matter from the external environment -- the mouth and throat, colon and rectum, skin, cervix, pancreas and glial brain cells." Additionally, the study found that, "only allergies associated with tissues that are directly exposed to environmental assaults had inverse relationships to cancer."

According to scientists, the relationship between cancer and allergies has always been suspect, but now with the new study the link between the two becomes more conclusive. Allergy symptoms may be providing signs and defenses to expel cancer-causing substances from entering the body. However, the Cornell scientists said that further studies are needed to determine if allergy symptoms should continue to be treated with medications or not because the results of the study were inconclusive on this matter.

What are Allergies?

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) reports that allergies, which are also referred to as hypersensitivity, occur as a reaction of the body’s immune system to particles or substances that bother the body. Individuals with allergies are often more sensitive to substances in the air than other individuals. Some of the most common substances that cause allergies include:

* pollen
* dust mites
* medicines
* insect bites/stings
* pet danger
* foods
* mold spores

Medical professionals are unsure as to why certain individuals develop allergies and others do not, but they have found that environment and genes both play a factor in the development of certain allergies. Scientists have determined that it is the body’s defense system responding to "false alarms," according to the NLM and the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, which also described the following symptoms of allergy sufferers:

* sneezing
* itching
* rashes
* runny nose
* swelling or asthma

Allergy Treatments

Of these types of medications is that of Singulair (Montelukast), which is a Leukotriene modifier. Singulair was approved for prescription-only release in February 1998 and is manufactured by Merck. Singulair and other Leukotriene modifiers have side effects that include the following, according to the Mayo Clinic:

* dizziness
* cough
* stuffy nose
* liver damage
* muscle weakness
* insomnia
* tiredness
* stomach pain, upset stomach
* headache

While Singulair is used by millions of patients, both young and old, who suffer from allergies and asthma, in March 2008, the drug was reportedly causing more than its normal side effects and was causing severe mood irregularities among patients including:

* mood changes
* behavioral changes
* suicidal thoughts/tendencies
* suicidal behavior

The large intestine, also called colon, is located in the abdominal cavity where it takes the form of an inverted U. It follows the small intestine into the pit right iliac then back along the abdomen, it is experiencing in its upper part, then downhill into the left iliac fossa where it forms a loop S (sigmoid colon ).

It then continues with the rectum and then, 15 cm lower, with the anal canal and ending with the anus. Malignant tumors of intestine develop in 70 percent of cases in the rectum and sigmoid, from the mucosa (inner layer) or more often a polyp (benign tumor that has cancer).

Symptoms

We have to wait very long, often several months to see the first symptoms usually occurring by the presence of blood or mucus in black, and disorders of transit for more than three weeks, mainly characterized by alternating diarrhea and constipation. Without treatment, cancer of the colon can cause intestinal obstruction, more rarely perforation of the bowel wall. Later, chronic bleeding that occurs in the tumor causes anemia and unintended weight loss.

Causes

If we do not yet know the exact causes of colon cancer, it is believed that some severe inflammatory diseases of the bowel as well as foods rich in fat and low in fiber promote its appearance.

We also believe that five per cent of cancers rectocoliques certainly have a family, ie they are favored by inherited genes. We know for example that children, brothers and sisters of people who had colon cancer may also develop this disease. This risk is particularly high in families with a "familial polyposis."

The disorder is characterized by the presence in many colon polyps, benign tumors that almost always turn into cancer if not removed in time. The progress of genetic engineering we will soon find the gene responsible for the disease among children in these families, regularly monitor those who own and operate them if necessary, while avoiding investigations and unnecessary fears to those who do the not.

Prevention and Early Detection

If there is no really effective way to prevent colon cancer, it is strongly recommended eating foods rich in fiber and drink plenty of fluids. The systematic excision of polyps discovered during an endoscopy is in fact the main measure to prevent colon cancer.

It is also impossible to practice early detection, for example by using a self-examination. The only way to detect colon cancer is to consult a doctor without delay from onset of symptoms mentioned above, namely the presence of blood in the stool and disorders transit. It is therefore necessary to regularly observe the appearance of the stool. The presence of blood should never be attributed to hemorrhoids, at least among those who have more than forty years before fully to investigate the intestine by endoscopy (direct examination with a flexible instrument that we introduced by the rectum).

As for reviews that are to detect the invisible presence of blood in the stool in search of a chronic hemorrhage, they may be useful but are not sufficient because they do almost never detect tumors early, when it is still curable. Moreover, the presence of blood in the stool is not always a sign of colon cancer.

The only way to make a diagnosis with certainty is that allows endoscopy to examine directly, or the lower part of the large intestine (rectodoscopie) where develop almost all the tumors of the intestine or the entire large intestine ( colonscopy).

What’s in the Cabbage?

Cabbage and the other green leafy vegetables can help kill cancer cells. According to the Cancer Research Conference in Britain, Indole-3 –carbinol(I3C) could be a powerful cancer fighter used in combination with chemotherapy.

I3C in cruciferous vegetables were found to make the tumors of breast cancers surrender to chemotherapy. The study entailed feeding 300 to 400 mg of I3C to the tumor cells; as a result the cancer cells were more easily killed by chemotherapy drugs. The I3C binds to the cancer cells and promotes the production of enzymes which will detoxify the carcinogens. They are said to have effects on the estrogen metabolism making it potent in the fight against breast and prostate cancer cells. Due to this, researchers are now studying the possibilities of using I3C to intervene with conventional cancers.

A study in the Netherlands revealed subjects who consumed the most vegetables lowered their risk by 25 per cent in getting colorectal cancer. Those who specifically consumed cruciferous vegetables dropped their risk of getting colorectal cancer by a significant 49 %.

In Singapore, a study found that regular consumption of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage lowered the potential of lung cancer by 30% in non-smokers. Smokers who ate the same type of veggies dropped their risks by 60%. Other studies have shown that cabbages and similar vegetables can also help fight bladder cancer.

Phytochemicals known as glucosinolates is believed to be responsible for the cancer fighting ability of the cabbage. These chemicals are metabolized by our body into their anti carcinogen form known as isothiocyanates.
