Why does hair loss happen?

During chemotherapy, women are subjected to chemotherapy drugs which are very powerful. These drugs are obviously formulated to attack cancer cells. However, the side effect of chemotherapy drugs is the fact that they also attack the cells that promote hair growth at the root. To this day, there has not been any way to avoid this, with no alternative treatments for chemotherapy.

When will my hair fall out?

Hair loss occurs during and after chemotherapy treatment takes place. The actual loss is temporary, but the amount of time it takes to fully recover is variable between patients. In general, it takes around 10-14 days after the start of chemotherapy treatment before the hair begins to fall out.

Hair loss can continue for up to a month after treatment in many cases. Don’t be alarmed if these figures vary, as each patient will be different. It is important to discuss any concerns during and after the treatment if you feel that things are not progressing like you have been told by a medical professional.

What to do next – can I speed up regrowth or stop hair loss after chemotherapy?

There is no real treatment for hair loss during chemotherapy; however there is a medically approved treatment for effective regrowth, which also promotes faster recovery of hair loss. This treatment is known as Rogaine.

Some smaller studies show that women who applied Rogaine during their chemotherapy treatment found that it not only took longer for their hair to fall out than women who did nothing to treat their hair, but also that the hair grew back quicker after therapy as a result of using Rogaine.

Whether you choose a product such as Rogaine or not, make sure that once the hair begins to fall out, that you protect your scalp from dangerous sun radiation. Remember that your scalp will now be exposed to the sun’s harmful rays (even on cloudy days) so it is always a good idea to wear a comfy hat where possible. It’s even an excuse to go shopping (hooray!)
