One-third of all cancers are curable. That means you can beat the disease with early detection and treatment. To do this, you should be aware of the early signs and symptoms of cancer. These are the following:

A change in bowel or bladder habits.

A sore throat that does not heal.

Unusual bleeding or discharge.

Thickening or lumps in the breast or elsewhere.

Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.

An obvious change in a wart or mole.

A nagging cough or hoarseness.

Unexplained anemia.

If you have any of these symptoms, don't be afraid. See a doctor or cancer specialist immediately. Early detection and prompt action by a physician can help you beat cancer. Delaying your visit to the doctor because of your fear of getting cancer will only make matters worse. As the American Cancer Society says:

"A fear of cancer can prevent you from detecting cancer at an early stage. A stage when it is highly curable. Everyone's afraid of cancer, but don't let it scare you to death."

Cancer can strike anyone. It can occur anywhere. But the most common types are cancer of the lung, breast, cervix, and colon.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 215,020 men and women (114,690 men and 100,330 women) will be diagnosed with and 161,840 men and women will die of cancer of the lung this year.

"Pulmonary cancer accounts for more than 120,000 deaths every year, and is the most common cause of death from malignancy in both sexes. The cure rate is low even under the best of circumstances, and the level of suffering is high," said Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Bloan-Kettering Cancer Center in "The Best Treatment."

Lung cancer is common in the 45 to 70 age group and is often seen in urban areas. Cigarette smoking is responsible for about 90 percent of cancer cases among men and 79 percent among women.

A person who smokes more than one pack of cigarettes a day has a 20 times greater risk of lung cancer than a nonsmoker. If you smoke two or more packs daily for 20 years, your chances of acquiring lung cancer increases from 60 to 70 percent. (Next: How cigarettes cause cancer.)

DIEP flap surgery - so why all the hype? If you are a woman facing mastectomy due to breast cancer you have a decision to make: do you want breast reconstruction? If the answer is "yes", plastic surgery and particularly DIEP breast reconstruction, may hold the key. Although reconstruction cannot replace the breast(s) you were born with or allow you to breastfeed, it can restore your natural silhouette and make you feel "whole" again following mastectomy. Depending on your health, breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after your mastectomy so you can wake up with new breasts already in place. While the cosmetic results with immediate mastectomy reconstruction are generally superior, reconstructive surgery can also be performed at a later time once the cancer treatment has been completed.

DIEP flap surgery represents today's gold standard in breast restoration. Advances in breast reconstructive techniques have made it possible to use excess skin and fat from the abdomen (rather like the tissue removed during a tummy tuck) to construct a new, "natural" breast without the need for implants or the sacrifice of abdominal muscle. The DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap is a sophisticated modification of an existing surgery known as the TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominus Myocutaneous) flap.

TRAM surgery is a common breast reconstruction technique that requires the rectus abdominus (sit-up) muscle to be sacrificed and relocated to the upper abdomen. Unfortunately, this technique can be associated with significant post-operative pain, prolonged recovery, loss of abdominal muscle strength (up to 20%), abdominal bulging (or "pooching"), and even abdominal hernia.

DIEP breast reconstruction is similar to the TRAM procedure but spares the rectus abdominus muscle. SKIN AND FAT ONLY are removed from the abdomen, transplanted to the chest and connected using microsurgery to create the new breast. NO MUSCLE is sacrificed. As the sit-up muscle is left behind in its natural place many of the above complications are avoided and the patient essentially receives a tummy tuck at the same time. There also tends to be far less pain and a quicker recovery time because the abdominal muscles are left in place.

Knowing the significant advantages of DIEP flap surgery it is easy to understand the reason for all the hype, especially for active individuals who donĂt want to sacrifice the strength of their abdomen. A breast that has been reconstructed with fat and skin will also look and feel more natural than an implant reconstruction and will last longer without the long-term risks that can be associated with implants. Unlike an implant, the reconstructed breast also ages like a natural breast.

As with all types of breast reconstruction however, 2 or 3 stages performed a few months apart are often required to complete the reconstruction process and to obtain the best cosmetic result. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the surgery very few centers in the US perform the DIEP procedure so many patients will have to travel for the procedure. The good news is that many of these specialist centers will accommodate out-of-state and even international patients. So how do you find a top DIEP flap surgeon? To learn if a breast center or plastic surgeon near you offers this advanced procedure, please check the following websites:

www.diepbreastreconstruction.org/diepdocs1.htm and www.breastrecon.com/id10.html

The lists on these websites seem fairly thorough. Having said that, currently there are only about 40 plastic surgeons in the US that routinely perform DIEP breast reconstruction. Before choosing a DIEP surgeon ensure that he/she is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has extensive experience with this type of surgery (preferably over 100 procedures). Ask about the success rate in their hands (most specialists boast a flap survival rate of 97% to 99%+) and how many cases they have performed.

Unfortunately, some patients will face difficulties in gaining access to specialists offering DIEP breast reconstruction even though insurance companies are federally mandated to pay for the cost of breast reconstruction. Here again it pays to seek out plastic surgeons who specializing in these procedures as typically an insurance specialist is available to help patients with insurance issues.

Plastic, Reconstructive and Microsurgical Associates (PRMA) of South Texas is one of the largest private practices in the US offering microsurgical breast reconstruction. Our board certified plastic surgeons are DIEP flap specialists performing more than 300 microsurgical breast reconstructions each year. Most cancer cells invade and destroy surrounding tissue by building up into a mass of cells. This mass is called either a growth, tumor or neoplasm (new growth).

Not all tumors, however, are cancerous. Benign tumors, while still abnormal, do not differ much from normal cells and do not threaten life. They do not grow wildly or rapidly. Nor do they destroy normal cells or spread to other places.

Malignant or cancerous cells, on the other hand, are dangerous because they deprive normal cells of nourishment and space. They divide rapidly and look much different from other cells. Unlike benign tumors, malignant cells have the ability to spread throughout the body and destroy other tissues.

"More than 200 types of cancer have been identified. There are three basic categories of cancer: carcinoma (cancer of the epithelial cells, which line organs and secrete mucus), sarcoma (cancer of connective tissue, such as bone, fat, and muscle), and fluid cancer (for example, leukemia). Some cancers may fall into more than one category," said the editors of Consumer Guide's "Family Health & Medical Guide."

How do normal cells become cancerous? What makes them run wild? One possible answer lies in the rearrangement in the chromosomes in the cell - a phenomenon brought about by oncogenes.

Oncogene comes from the Greek term "oncos" which means a mass or tumor. These special genes apparently cause normal cells to divide abnormally, leading to cancer.

All of us carry the normal form of oncogenes which are called proto-oncogenes. Proto-oncogenes are found in all of our cells and play many useful roles. They regulate cell division, organ development, and control the growth of cells needed to repair injured tissue.

But years of exposure to cancer-causing agents or carcinogens can affect the way proto-oncogenes work and transform them to oncogenes. This is how cancer begins.

"Most cancer researchers believe that somehow, usually over a period of years, cancer-causing agents repeatedly brought into the body, finally damage a critical piece of a cell's genetic code. The damage causes the cell to send out abnormal messages related to some aspect of cell growth," explained Marrion Morra, assistant director of the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center of Yale University School of Medicine in Connecticut, and Eve Potts in "Choices: Realistic Alternatives in Cancer Treatment."

"As new cells spring from the old, the misled cell leads an onslaught of others that result in runaway growth. The altered genes - oncogenes - take charge," they said. (Next: Cancer risk factors.)

The merely diagnosis of cancer is one of the scariest things one can experience, let alone the allopathic cancer treatments following diagnosis.

One of the most important action cancer survivors should take is have a family meeting and discuss risk concerns with all their loved ones.

Having one family member diagnosed with cancer, places all the other family members in a high risk zone.

Luckily, naturopathic medicine offers a lot of insight and knowledge into the area of cancer prevention; it is actually one of its strengths.

Here are some tips one should look into if interested in cancer prevention:

Since cancer operates in an oxygen-poor environment, the well-exercised body is far more likely to repel cancer cells or keep them from propagating.

People who are under a high level of stress or who are sick, whether from cancer or some other disease, have a much higher requirement for vitamin C than those not under such stress or illness.

Antioxidants protect the cell's DNA and membranes from free- radical damage, thus preserving normal cell reproduction and overall functioning.

recent study of workers at Chernobyl nuclear power station in Russia found that Gingko biloba, taken over a 2-month period, caused a two-thirds decrease in their chromosome damage.Such damage can eventually lead to the development of cancer.

Breast cancer patients who underwent supportive/ expressive group therapy lived on average twice as long as those who did not ( control group).

In another study, patients with malignant patients with malignant melanoma assigned to a series of six 90- minute support group meetings were less anxious and depressed than controls, and had significantly lower rates of recurrence and mortality a full 6 years later.

A good prevention protocol for your loved ones would have to include good antioxidants-at least vitamin C.

Protecting your loved ones is paramount for cancer survivors.

From a western nutritional perspective, we know that including an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats helps to strengthen our overall health, improve cardiovascular health, and create strong immunity systems.

A Chinese nutritional perspective embraces those ideals and expands the role of food as medicine in acknowledging that certain types of food have specific resonances with the energies of the immunity system and our abilities to release carcinogenic pathogens, and give support to the body to recover from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Turnips

This remarkable yet common healing food has an impact on all 12 meridians (energy pathways in the body) to help us move out pathogens and detoxify the body.

Turnips in the diet can provide support to people who are going through chemotherapy or radiation therapies or for those who need to detoxify stress chemicals that form as we respond to everyday life.

In Asian countries, soups are made of turnip, carrots and cabbage to help strengthen the immunity system and heal from viruses, bacterial infections and other pathogens. A cup or two of this type of soup 4-7 times a week, can strengthen the internal organs and promote a vibrant flow of energy throughout the body. When our energy flows smoothly and without obstructions, disease cannot exist.

You can make this soup easily by using a base of 4 cups of organic chicken broth (low sodium or organic vegetable broth), 3 large turnips diced, 3 large carrots diced, and 1/2 cup of white cabbage. Add in 1-2 tsp of toasted garlic, 1 small purple onion, 2 tsp of fennel seed, and 2 stalks of finely chopped organic celery for flavor.

Bring to boil, then simmer for one hour.

Lycopene Rich Foods

Lycopene is similar to beta carotene, a powerful anti-oxidant that helps to prevent cancer. Lycopene occurs naturally in the prostate and declines with age. However, we can help to support healthy levels of lycopene through diet.

Foods rich in lycopene include red vegetables and fruit, especially cooked or processed tomatoes. Other foods include pink grapefruit (check for interactions with certain cancer and other medications), watermelons, apricots, and pink guava.

However, before you rush out to buy lycopene supplements, you should also be aware that the efficacy of supplements of lycopene and high consumption of lycopene rich foods has been questioned by the FDA after examining data from 107 observational studies and 23 studies that included blood analysis.

The FDA stated that consuming lycopene supplements or high amounts of lycopene rich foods does not have a significant impact on prostate health and cancer. The FDA's position on this issue was reported in the Journal of Cancer Institute (July 10, 2007) issue.

Yet, anecdotal clinical evidence exists of clients improving their PSA levels (levels that indicate the health of the prostate) by adding lycopene rich foods to their diets.

From a Chinese nutritional perspective, lycopene and other anti-oxidants are not magic bullets. Instead, it is thought that the presence of anti-oxidants such as lycopene, in combination with other nutritional and energetic properties of foods, can be a powerful tool in helping the body to detoxify and protect against cancer. This is why it is important to take a balanced approach and integrate a wide variety of foods in the diet.

Similarly, the American Cancer Society advocates a diet comprised of a wide variety of foods as opposed to being excessive with any one food or taking high levels of anti-oxidant supplements.

Pumpkin Seeds

This simple food appears to diminish the triggering of prostate cell multiplication by testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone-a conversion product of testosterone). As a result, pumpkin seeds may help to prevent enlargement of the prostate gland.

Pumpkin seeds help to create healthier cholesterol levels, and protect bones by providing a source of zinc (low levels are associated with more hip fractures and osteoporosis) .

Sprinkle raw pumpkin seeds over salads, into soups and over other favorite foods. For added flavor, you might wish to toast the seeds but the nutritional value is higher when eaten raw.

Organic Chicken

In the Chinese nutritional system, chicken helps to strengthen the internal organs of the kidneys, said to rule our reproductive organs on an energy level. Organic chicken is free of hormones, antibiotics and pesticides, and helps to detoxify the body. Chicken is also a lean source of protein.

Include other lean organic meats and fresh produce to further reduce toxins in the diet.

Affordable sources of organic produce and some meats are available at local farmer's markets. Also, you may wish to join a community garden to obtain the freshest sources economically and help others partake of organic foods.

Drink Healing Beverages

Decaf green tea, chrysanthemum tea, barley tea, red clover, and saw palmetto tea: All of these natural teas are rich in anti-oxidants and have detoxifying properties.

Chrysanthemum has a cooling, detoxifying effect. When combined with a small amount of decaf green tea, cinnamon and ginger, chrysanthemum can help quell nausea from chemotherapy and radiation therapies.

Trained Chinese herbalists often combine chrysanthemum with other herbs to create a decoction or tea that helps to heal prostate cancer.

Foods to Avoid

Decrease the level of sugar, caffeine, and fat in your diet, particularly trans-fatty acids. Read labels. When you see the word" hydrogenated," that is a clue that trans-fatty acids are present. All of these foods create excessive heat in the body on an energy level. Since the energy of cancer is hot, if we diminish foods that feed heat, we can also protect our bodies against cancer.

Similarly, chemotherapy and radiation are also hot in nature. By reducing hot natured foods in our diet, we can empower ourselves to minimize the side effects of these types of treatments and detoxify the body.

Eliminate sugar substitutes such as sucralose (Splenda) and aspartame (Nutrasweet). Although many studies have produced data which suggest that these sugar substitute sweeteners are safe for regular human consumption, these products do not contain properties that heal the internal organs.

Also eliminate sweeteners which contain saccharin, which studies have found is associated with certain health risks such as birth defects and cancer.

Stevia is an all natural sweetener that is appropriate for diabetics or others who are trying to eliminate sugar. Stevia Rebaudiana is an herb in the chrysanthemum family which provides natural sweetness without raising glucose levels in diabetics, and contains properties which are said to help balance high blood pressure, help balance the pancreas, and reduce stomach acidity.

Breast cancer is a major health concern and you need to know if you have breast cancer symptoms or signs. Women including men have breast cancer as I wrote in my last newsletter. According to the recent survey worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer and the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the world.
Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among women. The number of cases worldwide has significantly increased since the 1970s, a phenomenon partly blamed on the way that we eat and the pollution that exists in the water, air, and food. The other big factor in cancer is the thoughts that we have. Toxins and chemical pollution cause acid and free radicals in our body and so do negative thoughts. It is these acids and free radicals that change your body’s pH and that depletes the oxygen in your cells allowing cancer to form freely and to multiple. To protect yourself against cancer, you need to know the signs of breast cancer so you can take action against it right away and to learn good nutritional habits.

Due to the high incidence of breast cancer among older women, screening is now recommended in many countries. Recommended screening methods include breast self-examination and mammogram. This test has been estimated to reduce breast cancer-related mortality by 20-30%. Routine and annual mammography of women older than age 40 or 50 is recommended.
Mammograms do not detect all possible cancer tissue. They can detect micro calcification of calcium, which might indicate the presents of cancer. Calcium can deposit in tissue and this is caused by an acid body. To stay in solution, calcium must have enough sodium in the surrounding liquid. In an alkaline body, there is plenty of sodium to keep calcium in solution, but in an acid body, calcium will precipate out and form crystals.

Early signs and symptoms of breast cancer are usually not painful. This may be the reason why most women don’t know they have breast cancer until after several breast cancer signs and symptoms start to appear. You should see your health care provider, if you notice the following:
· Lump in the armpit or above the collarbone that does not go away in two weeks or so. Although most breast lumps are not cancerous, it always best to check them out

· Breast discharge is a common problem and is rarely a symptom of cancer, but if it is from only one breast or if it is bloody, then check with your doctor

· Nipple inversion is a common in normal nipples, but nipple inversion that has developed recently can be of concern

· Changes in the breast skin including redness, changes in texture, and puckering. These changes are usually caused by skin diseases but occasionally can be associated with breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a condition where you lack oxygen in your cells and when you have an acid body. To prevent cancer from forming, you need to learn how to make your body more alkaline. In my new nutrition course, I concentrate on how you can make your body more alkaline. An alkaline body not only stops cancer but also stops and prevents most diseases from forming in your body.
Don’t wait until you have symptoms of breast cancer or any other disease before you start improving your health habits. Start now learning what good nutrition is and how you can be free from illness.

Rudy Silva is a natural nutritionist that has a nutrition course that will help you prevent, stop, or eliminate illness. To find out more about how you can do this, go to: Using Nutrition to Stop Illness

The revised edition of my book Called into Life by the Light was published in late July of 2006.
Just before Christmas 2006, I e-mailed David Tumey for an update on what had happened since his and Sheline’s original work on the Royal Rife Ray Tube in terms of developing a method for isolating the offending organism in each specific case and finding the exact frequency which causes that organism to disintegrate, and being able to do so in a more precise and time efficient manner.

On December 22nd he e-mailed the following response together with a power point presentation that shows the system and it’s components and how it works, as well as the real data collected from some experimental subjects. Mr. Tumey wrote:
"With regard to the detection of Mortal Oscillatory Rates (MORs) in vivo, after Rife perfected his light-heterodyning technique for imaging live bacteria viruses microscopically, he next discovered that a radio frequency (RF) plasma (light) could destroy the pathogens if it was modulated at a resonant frequency. This frequency he called the Mortal Oscillatory Rate or MOR. To discover frequencies that had the desired destructive effect on a given targeted pathogen, he would observe the bug under his microscope while he painstakingly tuned a frequency generator until devitalization was observed. He would then repeat these experiments until a precise MOR could be determined. These were the treatment frequencies he used as part of his therapy. He developed his cancer-fighting protocols through this technique having discovered that certain forms of cancer could be transmitted via a filterable virus – a virus that could be destroyed in vivo if a patient was exposed to this properly modulated RF plasma energy field.

The question of course is: Is there a more efficient way to obtain the MOR frequencies, and further, can the MOR frequencies be obtained in vivo?

In the late 90’s, early 2000’s Dr. Lu Lala of Dayton OH began work trying to solve this problem. Dr. Lu is a Chiropractor and had been practicing medicine for his entire adult life. He used to work with instruments called galvanometers and Pico ammeters used in measuring small electrical potentials and currents. As a chiropractor, he used these devices to diagnose subluxations (pinched nerves). His idea was to locate electrical sensors along spinal dermatomes connected to a multi-channel Pico amp meter. His protocol called for tuning a frequency generator across a band of potential MORs while observing the electrical activity of the selected dermatomes. He would mark any resonant frequencies that were acquired as potential therapeutic frequencies. Thus his idea was to "Scan" a human subject and determine in vivo all of the various resonant MORs that would subsequently be used in later treatments. To help automate his procedure, he used a video camera with time-lapse photography and a programmable frequency generator. He would run a scan on a patient (which normally would take about 2 hours) then review the video that showed both the MOR frequency and dermatome response. He would record the actual frequencies of interest in a lab notebook. This review process took several hours to complete and was done after a scan had been recorded." 1
When Mr. Tumey got involved in the project around 2001/02 time frame, he developed a software algorithm that completely automated the entire process. Using a computer, and a computer–controlled frequency generator, his system would scan a patient and automatically record the electrical response from the Pico amp meter. Once the scan was complete, all the relevant data was already in the computer, all the operator had to do was to go through the data and "click" on the potential MOR frequencies which were subsequently loaded into a therapy table that would be used in future treatments. This technique reduced the entire scan, recording and analysis time to approximately one hour. Since this time, he has developed an improved system that is anticipated to reduce these times to about 20 minutes.

Currently there are two working prototypes. One is located in a medical clinic in Hermosillo, Mexico and is being operated by a Dr. Romero. The other is located in a lab in Dayton, Ohio where research into this technique continues.

I have the Power Point presentation that shows the system and its components and how it works as well as real data collected from some experimental subjects. This is a fascinating presentation that shows that light is playing and will continue to play an ever-expanding role in highly effective non-invasive therapies. Light is the medicine of the present and the future.

Longer-Overwhelming scientific evidence suggests that the weak parts in our genetic armor can be compensated for through interventions involving diet, exercise, lifestyle modification, and stress management. Genetics and constitutional factors will make some people more disposed to problems in the cardiovascular system, skin, Cancer or memory. Yet, lifestyle factors can be controlled to varying degrees to compensate for genetic weak links. For example if any of your ancestors have had Diabetes or Breast cancer you need not fear.

Research shows that genetics accounts for only a small percentage of physical and mental aging. The maximum contribution comes from our lifestyle, our engagement with life, what we eat, the way we manage stress, our social connections, and sense of personal power. These are definitely not in our genes. Let us not believe in Karma theory anymore and realize that we are the masters of our own fate.

Genes do influence health patterns to a considerable when a person is young. After the age of 50, genetic expression, and thus life expectancy, is more influenced by lifestyle, environment, and nutritional factors. When a person is in their seventies and eighties, there is not much genetic influence left. At elderly age lifetime of environmental influences and personal choices have far more influence than genes.

We have far more control over the aging process than we previously thought. We know that certain genes are associated with a greater risk for lung cancer. Yet, as smoking rates have fallen, so too has the incidence of this life-shortening disease. Heart disease incidence in the U.S. has dropped by 45% since the 1950s. This wasn't primarily accomplished through high-tech, but through improved lifestyles, lower smoking rates among men, and improved diets-all factors that modified bio¬chemical processes governed by our genes.
