Prostate cancer is still one of the leading cancers among men, and it is projected that roughly one in every six American men will be diagnosed with this type of cancer within their lifetime.

Add to that the fact that these statistics may not account for those that have not been diagnosed, and you have a full fledged "epidemic", if you look at it from a percentage of population standpoint. In fact, many people reading this probably know someone that has been diagnosed with this cancer, or may have even had a brush with it themselves.

Aside from the fact that it is a leading cancer form in men, it also is considered in males to be a second leading cause of death. It's no wonder that prostate cancer is at the forefront of men's health and prevention in medical research when it comes to prevention, detection and treatment.

Researchers have been hard at work to come up with alternative testing to the still most popular form of testing, the PSA test. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, which is an enzyme that is released by this male-specific gland, which tends to be released in much higher amounts when the gland is inflamed or enlarged, or is fighting cancer.

It is a test combined with a digital rectal exam, that many men find uncomfortable for obvious reasons, and may want to naturally avoid after they reach the age of fifty years old. This is the age when doctors recommend their male patients start getting this test, since after fifty years old the risk of getting this cancer increases significantly.

The PSA test itself is actually a simple blood test, and has been criticized for sometimes being unreliable and creating false positives and false negatives, hence the search for better screening methods. The screening method that is being worked on currently is one that may be more spot-on than the current mode of detection via rectal exam combined with the PSA test.

It is the new buzzword in the scientific community for a variety of diseases and cancer in the world of detection : genetic testing. Genetic testing has proven to be a very promising method of finding cancer markers in individuals because it can be more detailed in it's individual assessment, and finding genes responsible for cancers and other diseases is pretty much a fool proof method of detecting likelihood of cancer or actual cancer itself.

While genetic testing can definitely help either to rule out prostate cancer or to give the doctor and patient a pretty good idea if further prevention or treatment should take place, it cannot as of yet be used in and of itself as a test, but instead is a stepping stone to determining the validity of PSA screenings and digital rectal exams.

It's basically giving a more complete answer as to whether tests that are done are actually an accurate predictor of whether a patient has it, and whether treatment should be commenced. Many doctors and patients feel that with a more complete and definitive answer in testing, they feel more comfortable with diagnosis and prevention testing, and more confident that they are getting the correct results. This renewed confidence could lead more men to take part in prevention and detection screening.

Currently the largest studies in genetic testing for prostate cancer are being carried out in Sweden, and are looking promising, but as of yet they are not conclusive and the method needs more defining and sharpening.

One thing is for sure, that genetic testing is proving to be an up and coming tool in the definitive and more accurate detection of many different kinds of cancers, including breast cancer in women. With continued research and refining, genetic testing may prove to be of great benefit for men in the prevention of prostate cancer advancement.

If you are interested in lowering your risk of colon cancer and you are unable to easily secure raw milk, I would encourage you to seek grass-fed, organic, raw milk cheese in your local health food store. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which lower the risk of all types of cancer. What ever may be the case if you had developed breast cancer or have a high risk for developing breast cancer, first thing is do not panic.

Factors that can affect your risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer are called risk factors. Some studies suggest that people who regularly take 140 mg or more of vitamin C have lower risk of developing lung cancer than those who only get 90 mg or less of vitamin C dosage.

Being free of some cancers five years after you have been diagnosed does imply a cure, but it is not the case in breast cancer. Finding cancer in the early stages before it has a chance to spread makes the treatment much easier and the cure rate much higher. Stay away from the trap of focusing on one or two specific foods that claim to "cure" cancer.

Generally women find there are few side effects to this sort of treatment, and if the cancer is still in the early stages, radiotherapy has a good chance of providing a complete cure. It was faith in a product that inevitably helped folks lose weight, or cure cancer, reverse diabetes, re-grow their teeth, or all of the above, and make them a fortune in the process.

Making Changes You Can Continue: So, if you're interested in reducing your breast cancer risk, you need to make some changes to your lifestyle to help protect your health. Chemotherapy may be employed if the cancer has spread outside the prostate in order to shrink the cancer or slow it's growth. In fact, some strong chemicals used for deep peeling, such as phenol, may cause cancer of the skin or side effects.

For example, an ice cream company advertises their support for an environmental movement, or yogurt companies start a campaign to stop breast cancer. There are several potential downsides to PSA testing; for example a high PSA does not always mean a patient has prostate cancer.

I am writing this article to give hope and options to cancer patients and family members who are looking for better ways to treat this dreaded disease. The diagnosis of the disease is often accompanied by fear of the treatment since it is so invasive and destructive to healthy parts of the body. Since many people are anxious to get rid of the disease as soon as possible they may not seek alternatives until after the conventional treatment has failed. In reality, depending on the cancer alternatives alone or combined with conventional care have better statistical results.

My Dad is one who thankfully has not become a statistic. He was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer at age 56 in 1992. The recommendation of his local oncologist was to treat with prostectomy, chemo and radiation. My Dad was not interested in radiation or chemo since he had already seen many friends die of the side effects of these treatments. Soon after this my Dad's sister heard about a Doctor at Stanford who was well respected for his work with prostate cancer. My Dad went to see him and his recommendation was for prostectomy only. He said he had tried chemo and radiation for prostate cancer and it just didn't work well. He also recommended following up with a blood PSA test every year.

My Dad recovered from the surgery and proceeded to get his blood work done every year for the next 11 years. He had a slight increase in PSA in his last test and the Doctors did not say anything about it so he decided not to get it tested anymore. Three years later he went to the doctor feeling very tired. In April 2006 they found his PSA to be over 300 and his x-rays and PET scans confirmed widespread osseous metastases throughout his spine, pelvis, ribs, and hips. The prognosis from local oncologists was grim. They recommended radiation for pain, but not to cure the cancer. They also predicted him to live approximately 6 months to 2 years.

He then tried an alternative clinic with various treatments and a radical change in diet for the next 6 months. This was not effective for him. His next PET scan was much worse and his PSA was over 700. He was in pain, not hungry and very lethargic.

He then read a book called "Outsmart Your Cancer" by Tanya Harter Pierce. He found she had written four chapters of twenty four about Protocel and every other treatment she had only written one chapter. He decided to try Protocel. It is an antioxidant available over the counter. It is a liquid that must be taken every 5 hours. The cost of this treatment is approximately $50 per month. Within 4 weeks his pain had reduced and he had more energy. He continued with the Protocel for the next 6 months and improved significantly. He also went back to Stanford and received 2 injections of Lupron 2 months apart. He was told the Lupron may halt the cancer growth but would not reverse it.

In April 2007, one year after his diagnosis his PET SCAN WAS ALMOST CLEAR of any bone metastasis. "Marked improvement on the previous pattern of widespread osseous metastatic disease. No new bone lesions are seen and the previous have nearly resolved." Thank GOD! We were so grateful and happy.

Just last week, 6 months later, still taking Protocel, and not further injections, October 15, 2007, my Dad had another clear PET scan.

Protocel can be purchased at 866-776-8623 or http://www.protocel.com I highly recommend the book Outsmart Your Cancer by Tanya Harter Pierce because she goes into the action, contraindications and other specifics about how to use Protocel correctly.

A guide on how to prevent, detect and survive prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer claims its turf silently. The tumor grows in the prostate gland discreetly without any obvious symptoms until an advanced stage of growth is reached. The symptoms that do show up at this stage are too mellow to be associated with something as serious as cancer, and men usually ignore them attributing them simply to signs of advancing age.

Any man will get Prostate Cancer if he lives long enough. How come? 70% of all men above 90 have a tumor of some kind in his prostate gland. Nobody is immune to this deadly cancer. The only means of protection is to know it in and out and to detect it early on.

Billions have been spent on researching Prostate Cancer and none of that has resulted in a solid conclusion as to how it is caused although some factors that influence its formation have been identified conclusively. For instance, the age of a person affects the probability of cancer considerably. The older you are the higher is your chance of having prostate cancer. Men of African-American descent are genetically predisposed towards prostate cancer, and so are men who habitually consume a diet rich in fat and predictably so.

It is quite possible to detect prostate cancer before it reaches an advanced stage through one of the various tests that are available. The most rudimentary of them all is the rectal analysis which is conducted to determine whether there is an enlargement of the prostate gland. The DRE, as it is referred to, is the ingenuous process of inserting a gloved and lubricated finger into the back passage to actually feel the prostate gland to determine its size. Ultrasound test, a more refined version of this test, is performed by inserting an ultrasound probe instead of the customary finger of the rectal analysis. Another noteworthy procedure that joins this league is the biopsy where small cylindrical tissue cores are extracted from the prostate gland itself by the use of a probe with a special spring loaded needle. These samples are then analyzed under a microscope to detect instances of cancerous growth.

Although these tests sound macabre and intimidating, there is a blood test that could determine Prostate Cancer. The PSA test (Prostate Specific Antigen test) is performed by extracting a blood sample from the patient and analyzing this sample for abnormally high levels of a particular antigen produced in the prostate gland, high levels of which are a telltale sign of Prostate Cancer.

When prostate cancer is detected early on, there is a very high probability of achieving a complete cure without a possibility of recurrence. Early detection of Prostate Cancer is the key to a successful cure since for a case where the tumor growth has advanced to the bones; even surgery simply fails to cut it, literally.
